I don't think it's consensus (or even true). I asked my metaethicist partner and he said the same.

increasing the ratio of voltage to current is an act of resistance

My partner also suggested 'by weight', which comes with the added bonus of making your shelves unstable

Not only is it useless, snobby, and inconvenient, but also you have to update it every year

This is basically just two kinds of apoliticality. There's 'apolitical in how an answer is reached' (VFI type stuff) and 'apolitical in the perception of politicians' (constantly moving target, epistemically useless). Whether the former is desirable is debatable. Nobody should say the latter is.

Thankfully, my support is fatal to all playoff runs. So it won't be too long.

I have a duty to warn: after accidentally attending the best game of the season (this past Sunday) I have become afflicted with the disease known as 'Toronto Blue Jays'. Prognosis is not good. Blue Jay posting will now commence, as part of my treatment plan.

You can't even begin to understand conspiracy theories without a good understanding of trigonometry. It's a real sine quanon

So, what's the strategy? Nobody wants to hire someone they can't bring in. Are yinz just going to stop considering applications from non-citizens?

Really curious to hear how people on US university hiring commitees are planning to respond to the 100 000 dollar H1-B bribe rule. There isn't a junior academic in the world with that kind of cash to throw around, and I don't imagine many departments would enjoy it either.

"Yeah, you've been to a lot of roads, bud. But you still haven't ruled out that this one is the dustiest and sandiest"
whyjenwhy.bsky.social
You know, the narrator in 'I've been everywhere' never actually specifies whether he's seen a road with as much dust and sand as the Winnemucca road he's currently on. He names many other roads he's been to, but doesn't make any ruling on their comparative dustiness or sandiness.

Last night, the frat house on my street threw a very loud party (as is their right). But the weird thing was, the music they played at this very loud party in 2025 was at least 80% the exact same music I heard at frat parties in 2012. That's weird, right? Hypotheses?

That's the thing - it was a small shelf carrying only new copies of the very most obvious records (Rumours, Sgt. Pepper, etc.). The sort of thing you would expect any record-liker to already have!

There's a store in this airport in which you can buy vinyl records. That famously travel-friendly, small, durable, and easy-to-use music delivery method, vinyl records

I watched it on an aeroplane once and didn't like it, but it might just be that it's precisely the opposite of a good aeroplane movie

"But what about the implications? How will this all conclude?" I cry, as I am escorted away from the premises

In the final judgement, I supplicate before God: "Tell me, please, before I learn my fate - what is the rulebook of the universe? Is it GURPS? Rolemaster?"

God turns his ineffable face to me and says "I've been pretty into Thirsty Sword Lesbians lately"

Ah, see, if only the Lewisians had thought about that. Assume the world is an RPG played upon the tabletop of eternity by gods rolling dice, and then the Best System of the Laws of Nature is just whatever makes for the shortest and most descriptive rulebook.
No wonder quantum mechanics is like that

So, is your possible-world counterpart your character, or do you also have a counterpart besides your character? Are all the characters you have played counterparts of each other? And most importantly: is this finally how we decide which is the Best System?

I find myself with one of those rare and beautiful things tomorrow: a day on which I have zero things to do. I'm near Stockholm. Any suggestions?
