I'm reading a book series rn (The Black Gate, though that's not relevant) and a certain passage went "That look of terror she'd seen in Kethe's eyes when Tiron had taken off his helm had struck her to the quick." I was confused at first on what "the quick" meant, and I remembered hearing somewhere that it was an old term for nerves. Then I was trying to remember where I remembered it from, and realized I got it from a furry visual novel called "Sylving" and that it was a fictional term So now I'm still half confused, since "quick" was actually a historical term for life or being alive, though I couldn't find evidence of it being used in that context.
