I'm a little hopeful for that. First, elections are organized by the states, the federal government does not play a role. Secondly, rumours have it that a bunch of Republicans will resign even before the midterm elections, giving the majority in the House to the Democrats.

I think Russia is pressing for a "peace deal" because it knows, when midterm elections are won by Democrats in November 2026, Trump is a lame duck and they won't have any leverage anymore. It's easy for me to say, but Ukraïne should not agree on a peace deal until then.
