One popular legend tells of the temple cat at Gōtoku‑ji saving 17th century feudal lord Ii Naotaka from lightning by beckoning him to shelter. As a result, the temple then prospered under the li family's patronage. In honor of the cat, maneki-neko was created in later generations. (2/5)
