This is exactly the kind of immoral laws passed in the South after the Civil War. We say "Jim Crow" but that blanket phrase hides what these laws really were, ways to restore slavery under a different set of rules with exactly the same outcomes.

"Never been closer" is technically correct if they haven't advanced in their pursuit at all. Only practiced liars use such convoluted phrasing.

I think we need to work on the "no slaves" part.

We have slave labor working out of migrant detention centers right now. We have slave labor working for the profit of private prisons right now.

And don't get me started on wage slavery...
