Civilians in eastern DRC are being massacred by the Islamic State-affiliated ADF in a largely ignored war, with hundreds killed in recent months and survivors begging the world to pay attention, according to a new Amnesty report. In Ntoyo village, North Kivu province, ADF fighters mingled for hours at a funeral wake before suddenly attacking mourners with hammers, machetes and guns, killing more than 60 people in one night in September, according to Amnesty’s new investigation. Days later in Byambwe, gunmen posing as civilians asked for directions to a hospital, then opened fire inside, killing at least 17 people there and more than 30 overall, witnesses told Amnesty. UN figures show ADF attacks have surged in 2025, including at least 89 civilians killed in a single week of assaults across Lubero in November, on top of earlier massacres in July and August.
