new food fear unlocked: trying to make breakfast and my egg white was red. Learn from my mistake, don't skip the part where you crack each egg into a separate container one at a time.

Yes, I'm gonna be cheering for the Chiefs. No, I'm not mad that most of the country hates them. I actually get it-it's fatigue, just like when it was the Patriots in the 90s and the Steelers in the 80s. Signed, a KC woman in Pittsburgh.

book review Friday (eve!)
James by Percival Everett.
In spite of some glaring problems here in the 21st century, I do have a soft spot for Mark Twain. I appreciate the way you can follow Twain's progress from "member of a slaveholding family" to "abolitionist" through his writings. 1/4

Found a copy of The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the church library earlier. Topic seems appropriate for current times, but everything else about this edition tells me it's too fragile to come home with me.

cataloging the books in our church library is going slow, but I've learned a lot in the process. If anyone's tried to catalog a collection before and has any helpful tools to recommend or advice, I'd love to hear it.

I've been posting the list of grievances as stated in the Declaration of Independence. It's been hard to read in light of current events and the abject racism within it. But I'm begging you, DO NOT LOOK AWAY. History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation: 1/

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance. 1/

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good. 1/

Today's book review is for An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz. It's a little dry and esoteric, but if it happens to be your thing, pick it up. I would absolutely have taken a class led by my favorite history professor about it 1/3

It seems like there's two possibilities: one, that wasn't what EM meant by that gesture, and we can expect a full-throated apology and more caution in the future. Two, that's exactly what he meant and he's pretty sure he can get away with it. One of these things is more likely than the other.

I am hoping for the best from the next four years, but it really isn't in me to be optimistic. Maybe he'll backpedal on a lot of his statements, and maybe I'll win the lottery in spite of never buying tickets. One of these things is more likely to happen than the other.

Week 2's vegetable was daikon. I didn't get a picture. I remembered not being super into radishes when I was younger, but I figured, hey, maybe I've changed in the last (mumble) years? I haven't, BUT there's a good chance I'll appreciate them when they're pickled...

Week 1 of trying a vegetable I've never tried before: jicama

I don't think I'd eat it as a snack when things like carrots or apples are easier to get here. Also didn't think it had much flavor. Maybe I'd have it as a little salad topping, but that's it. 2 out of 5.

random thing: I grew up hearing about the US Civil War (1861-1865), World War I (1914-1918), and World War II (1941-1945, at least for the US), and drew the only conclusion a morbidly-fascinated seven-year-old would draw: wars last four years. IDK why that crossed my mind BUT the good news is...

happy new year! Instead of trying to go for any of the typical new year's resolutions, this year I resolve to try one new fruit or vegetable a week. Suggest an unusual one (by US standards) for me to try!
