Life’s been pretty hectic for me at the moment, but I wanted to get back into drawing more regularly, even if it’s just a small daily doodle. It can count for #inktober too since I drew with my pen 😉 #doodles #sketches

Simple ink doodle patterns. A row of flowers, then a row of circles, and a row of triangles. I do these doodles to loosen my hand a bit, get my pressure right, as I usually have a very heavy hand and I’m trying to break that habit. And also just to get the ink flowing on my ballpoint pen before I do other sketches.

Kurt Vonnegut’s definition of what makes something “art” is one of my favorites I’ve seen - from a letter to his brother in 1995.

People capable of loving some paintings or etchings or whatever can rarely do this without knowing something about the art-ist. Again, the situation is social rather than scientific. Any work of art is one halt of a conversation between two human beings, and it helps a lot to know who is talking at you. Does he or she have a reputation for seriousness, for sincerity? There are virtually no beloved or respected paintings made by persons of whom we know nothing. We can even surmise a lot about the lives of whoever did the paintings in the caves underneath Lascaux, France.
So I dare to suggest that no picture can attract serious attention without a human being attached to it in the viewer's mind. If you are unwilling to attach your name to your pictures, and to say why you hope others might find them rewarding to look at, there goes the ballgame right there. Pictures are famous for their human-ness and not their picture-ness.
There is also the matter of craftsmanship. Real picture lovers like to "play along," so to speak, to look closely at the surface to see how the illusion was created by nothing but an unusual human being, with hands and eyes. If you are unwilling to say how you made your pictures, there goes the ballgame a second time.

Meet Slimer 😋 I just realised I haven’t drawn my yellow boy in years! So this was a good reminder 💛

Sculpture of my original character made with polymer clay. He is a yellow fish with blue markings, called Slimer. He likes to bite things, that’s how he got his name. Here he is biting a rock.

I went through a phase of redesigning Mirror, I’m still not 100% settled on her design.

In this drawing Mirror is a Baku warrior, with an elephant mask, ox tail, and tiger stripe tattoos. She’s using her powers here so her tattoos are glowing. Slimer is a floating yellow and blue fish.

Group photo (drawing) of my original characters. Ollie is a snuggly personification of fear, Mirror is the brown haired girl and she was an imaginary friend, Slimer is a floating yellow and blue fishy, and Albatross (Alba for short) is a flying tree who captains a ship on a flying angler fish.
I drew this back in 2018.

Ooh characters from Dungeon Meshi! But honestly anything you find fun will do, I’ve watched that sort of video from artists I like where they drew characters I didn’t know, and found awesome new stories that way 😋

People might bring up Vincent van Gogh as an example of a painter who did great work in spite of, or because of, his suffering. I like to think that van Gogh would have been even more prolific and even greater if he wasn't so restricted by the things tormenting him. I don't think it was pain that made him so great, I think painting brought him whatever happiness he had.

This has been a chaotic year for me, with an operation, a big move across the country, then a big move back and a dying iPad 🥲 It has also been a good year, I started drawing again in a sketchbook and I’ve been working on my drawing habit, recovering from burnout 🙏✏️📚

Art vs Artist post. Photo of me and my dog Foxy surrounded by my doodles. I mostly drew in my sketchbook this year, with some digital drawings that I drew in Procreate on my dying iPad. Drawings are a mix of fanart and original art. These doodles have helped me recover from art block and burnout 🥳
