Inventor and thing fixer.
I agree. I've been a software engineer for a couple decades now, and I certainly regret some of my code. All the devs I've worked with over the years have some regrets, too.

They say you gotta love yourself first. I'm working on it.

Hey, I worked for Raytheon! It paid my way through college, then paid off my student loan. Thankfully, I just did airport stuff and they never asked me to do weapons. I was prepared to quit. Nowadays, I get to just help out scientists!

I think we'll be friends. We apparently share some interests, and you seem like a well-intentioned fellow.

So true. I told my team that if they changed lines of code, delete the associated comments. Only add new comments if the code is somehow unclear. If the code is unclear, then rewrite it until it's clear.

I didn't do so well in boring times. I used to invent things. Mostly useless, but fun. Recently, though, I got laid off for the first time in my life, and I didn't deal with it very well. Did a lot of doomscrolling while waiting for responses to job applications.

Nope, just me being awkward online. I realize I come off pretty square. Only trying to be helpful and supportive, really.
February 15, 2024 at 6:40 AM
I was just trying to be supportive. Getting blocked sucks. I was suprememely unpopular as a kid in school, back before the intertubes, and sometimes social media makes me feel like I'm back on that playground all over again. Keep your chin up and stand your ground!

You too, Chris!
February 15, 2024 at 6:30 AM
Thanks for providing context. That was the perfect amount.

I miss the employee fridge. So much more biological diversity in there than in the one at home. And the variety of aromas!
February 15, 2024 at 6:24 AM
Sorry you got blocked. My nephew blocked me because he thinks I'm not liberal enough. It hurts all right. I don't really have any good advice, except to say, stay true to yourself.
February 15, 2024 at 6:16 AM
Oh, okay. Glad you weren't upset. I'll go back to trying to add insight and a little levity to this limited form of human engagement and not worry quite as much that my genuine, respectful queries and quips are being received negatively. Thank you for the feedback.
February 15, 2024 at 6:07 AM
Okay, thanks for the explanation. I'm new to this platform, but I figured out how to find my original post that was so upsetting to you. It was a question for Norah. I was genuinely curious about what she meant about explaining people's jokes back to them. When I look back on it, it was innocuous.
February 15, 2024 at 5:50 AM
Hi Norah Woodsey. I'm Will Bain. I'm wondering if people explaining jokes back is actually annoying, or just dorky. I'm worried that I probably do that sometimes in a misguided effort to relate, but end up just pissing people off.
February 15, 2024 at 5:38 AM
I'm feeling like I don't belong on the intertubes, because either I'm insensitive, or the medium just doesn't project my intention. Makes me want to just want to STFU.
February 15, 2024 at 5:32 AM
Dang, I hadn't realized I might have been pissing people off. I was just trying to be chummy. I guess it must have come off wrong. Unfortunately, bsky doesn't show the thread history, so I can't even remember now what I said that was potentially inflammatory.
February 15, 2024 at 5:31 AM
Hmm, do you mean on this social media platform, or in real life?
February 15, 2024 at 5:17 AM
Great, now all I can think about is gnawing on a giant brick of mozzarella. Mmm.
February 13, 2024 at 5:15 AM
Is it okay to reply to a joke with a sort of meta-joke along the same lines, to signal that you get it, and are just riffing on it, like you do with your pals when you're all just chilling and hanging out?
February 13, 2024 at 5:07 AM
Not worries. You are hang of it in soon time.
February 13, 2024 at 4:42 AM
Pretty sure the proper plural is Kleenices.
