A good many years ago my uncle tried that. The shell somehow was completely intact, but the interior was under pressure and exploded when he tapped the shell. There were bits of overheated egg on the ceiling.

Indeed, I looked up when the last wheat pennies were produced a few weeks ago. I saw a Canadian penny that was 60+ years old in the till not that long ago as well.
