Economic growth, driven by exports of wheat and citrus fruits, boosted the population in the coastal cities and widened the gap with the countryside. Farmers in Gaza grew barley for the breweries of Europe and their counterparts in the Galilee grea rich on exports of cotton

This has been a great @empirepoduk.bsky.social series, and a chance to try and remember my ‘crusader‘ studies from X years ago.

Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel remains 'a monument to Afghan resilience & to the bravery of its staff,' says @willdalrymple.bsky.social. In Lyse Doucet, '& her witty & sometimes heartbreaking book, they have found a worthy chronicler.'

Another stellar series by my favorite podcast, @empirepoduk.bsky.social. Most especially bc @anitaanand.bsky.social and @willdalrymple.bsky.social handle Gaza’s long and fascinating story with such sensitivity, nuance, and humility, traits many current commentators sorely lack

That was another excellent holiday really. SOPHIA by @anitaanand.bsky.social . The quotes on the front don't do justice to the sheer depth and scale of the book and the amount of research that must have been done to produce it. #booksky

And what of the Knights Templar, to whom the Crusader Kingdom gave the job of defending Gaza against Saladin? Who were these warrior monks when you strip away the accretion of Dan Brownish mythology and examine the original documentation?
