The roll out of 5G requires new access networks (RAN). To this end, the alliance of O-RAN operators aims to achieve openness in the market, coding and RAN interfaces.

Keynote: O-RAN: Goals and Challenges - Olivier Simon, Director, Radio Innovation, Orange Labs Networks This presentation will explain how O-RAN will trigger more intelligence and openness in the RAN domain. We will see which use cases require this new architecture and why O-RAN is coming at the right time. Major architectural change are necessary in the next years in order to improve E2E latency and benefit from the flexibility of virtualized network functions. O-RAN will provide the right framework in order to perform this transformation in an open manner and keeping at the same time economies of scale thanks to a global adoption.

TOKYO, JAPAN, September 18, 2019 --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that in collaboration with Fujitsu Limited, NEC Corporation and Nokia, it has successfully achieved multi-vendor interoperability across a variety of 4G and 5G base station equipment compatible with the international standards of the Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) Alliance, an industry group working to create more open and intelligent next generation radio access networks, including 5G networks. The O-RAN standards include fronthaul specifications and X2 profile specifications. This is believed to be the world's first realization of this level of multi-vendor interoperability in 4G and 5G base station equipment conforming to O-RAN specifications; DOCOMO will deploy the equipment in the pre-commercial 5G service it plans to launch on September 20, 2019 in Japan.
