Thank you for posting this, it's way underreported and misunderstood and the term itself (unfortunately) feeds into the right-wing fascist narrative that these cities are actively preventing agents from ICE enforcement. There's also an important public safety incentive behind these policies....

Yes, the operators aren't following regulations but that doesn't mean the state isn't out there doing what it can to enforce safety standards. We don't know from the article what punishments are levied. We do know that the state recognizes the danger and is now trying to do something about it.

The problem it seems is not about enforcing the rules on the books but that the regulations aren't sufficient given the number of operators and employees at risk. Hence the new proposal to follow Australia's lead in banning silica-based quartz countertops.

Of course, but we're in an environment where any and all workplace safety regulations are under attack because of corporatism and GOP insanity. How do you propose workplace safety standards get enforced in these small businesses if there's no will to do it?

Great piece and spot-on assessment of Jim Crane. He is not without criticism, but he has given Astros fans a plethora of great moments to remember and his refusal to stand pat at the trade deadline when his teams are within striking distance of a WS is commendable.
