What a musical journey it was! The Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are all sublime. I Believe In You and Wealth are two of the most beautiful songs ever written, but there’s also New Grass, After the Flood, Eden, The Rainbow, April 5th and many more.

If only Labor had the courage to do this.

Beautifully said. William Dalrymple is a wonderful public historian, and his podcast Empire is excellent. Importantly, he is no extremist or radical, but a clear eyed and humane observer, generous, considered and fair. If he takes this view, what does that tell us about the gravity of the situation!

Some great choices in that list, especially the Beatles and Talking Heads. I would also suggest Good Vibrations, Donna Summer’s I Feel Love, Biko, Senses Working Overtime and Radio Free Europe. Each of these in different ways foreshadowed music to come but was still accessible.

It feels dirty even making the comparison. One had arguably the greatest songwriting streak in history, the other is a forgettable relic from the 1970s.

Luai was involved in all 5 NSW tries.

As someone who became a test cricket fanatic in the 90s, when India and England were pretty ordinary, and teams like South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies were bursting with talent, it seems incredibly sad to me that future participation in this beautiful game will be decided by money.

Something for the rugby & cricket fans out there - first 3 winners of the rugby WC: NZ 87 Aust 91 SA 95. First 3 winners of the WTC: NZ 21, Aust 23, SA 25.

Not here to defend the Americans but both numbers seem inaccurate to me.

Also, the CCP has waged brutal and sadistic campaigns against its own people and never been held accountable - during the Great Leap Forward, during the Cultural Revolution, the crackdown after Tian’anmen and on Xinjiang.

That was a great discussion on LNL last night. Time for Labor to show us what they’re made of, and no excuses this time.

Great quote. One of the long-term dangers of weaponising antisemitism in such a cynical way is that it actually puts Jewish people in more danger.

He made a mistake. He apologised and corrected the mistake.

No reasonable person actually thinks that he, or Peter Lalor, or even Jeremy Corbyn, are antisemites, but those mistakes, and our double standards on this issue, ensure they are conveniently discredited and removed from public discourse.

I wonder if stuff like this is why the major parties really hate the Greens, while the antisemitism stuff is just a convenient slur.

@garyoldham.bsky.social is right, I said proportional rep but I meant preferential voting - that’s the key. Sorry still a bit drunk from the celebrations last night.
May 3, 2025 at 9:09 PM
The results speak for themselves. We are no smarter than Americans are, but the combination of proportional representation, mandatory voting and a decent public broadcaster ensures our politics remains moderate and based in reality.

Given how much money Palmer pours into it, the absolute dross they produce in terms of candidates and messaging, and how little he gets in return, I think it’s in our interest for the Trumpet of Patriots and the sentient ham to keep going!

Imagine the Nationals leader going on Sky News and saying they don’t listen to him. Ha!

It was the best thing Howard ever did, along with efforts to support independence for Timor Leste.
April 28, 2025 at 1:41 AM
In Australia, I haven’t heard anything about this. In fact, we have a mining billionaire lunatic who wants to mimic Trump so badly he called his party Trumpet of Patriots, and his ads are everywhere. He is unlikely to win a single seat though, haha!

Sounds like something Donny would say while being spanked by Daddy Vlad.

No argument with that at all, I was making a separate point.

The richest society in world history, where an estimated 40 million people live below the poverty line, including more than 1 in 8 children.

The richest society in the world, that spends more than any other on a broken private health care system, yet won’t introduce universal health care.

I don’t mean to be ageist but none of these people are under 50, barely under 65. How many of them are voting for what’s best for the American society and the global environment that their grandchildren will inherit, and how many are voting based on extremist content from some Facebook group?
