The Senate has confirmed Trump's pick to run NOAA. Neil Jacobs will lead an agency that's lost ~2,000 staff in a year and could lose most of its research division.

I did a deep dive on why Jacobs wanted this job for @bloomberg.com. Here's what I learned (thread)

They're not sending their best.

I am most of the way through it, and WOW. Yes. Not a light read, but an amazing read.

How about "natural energy," since this administration is bent on "natural" solutions for health problems and wellness, anyway?

OK, football-smart people, my son has a question I couldn't answer. When one defender forces the fumble and another recovers, who gets to wear the chain (or whatever the team has for turnovers)?

I love LOVE this because it shows hope. It shows that solutions work.

The Univ. of Nebraska’s Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences has established a webpage soliciting the community’s help in saving their program. Their hearing in front of campus admin is next Friday, Oct 10th. Please consider sharing why they’re essential!

At least we now have in writing that NWS operations will continue in the event of a shutdown. I mean, I was 99% sure that was the case - but in this day and age, I did want to see it confirmed.

Update: Commerce has now also posted its shutdown plan. BEA would completely shut down, and Census would shut down apart from some operations related to the 2030 decennial census. So no retail sales, international trade, PCE, GDP...

Don't be such a chicken. Of course there is a right answer, and it's the Big Dumper. His season is exceptional on offense and defense.

I’ve heard of people doing a Wikipedia hackathon to create or update pages for peers and colleagues. If you don’t get any volunteers here, maybe organize a bigger event where folks can participate and trade their updating services.

ACOG reaffirms that acetaminophen is safe for managing pain and fever during pregnancy. No reputable studies support suggestions like those in HHS’s recent announcement linking acetaminophen use in pregnancy to autism; in fact, high-quality studies show no such risk. https://bit.ly/47Wxc59

Had a horrible experience when I got mine 5 years ago. Had to track down all documentation (marriage certificates and divorce decrees) from every past marriage, not just most recent change. Every change from birth certificate to now. And this wasn't explained even after 2 trips with docs. #womantax

If I could just summarize 1 sentence from the new National Academy of Sciences study on climate, boldface, flashing red, it would be:

"the evidence for current and future harm to human health and welfare created by human-caused GHGs is beyond scientific dispute."

BEYOND SCIENTIFIC DISPUTE

I’m so glad to hear that! There is a really good book out there about the locusts - LOCUST by Jeffrey Lockwood. Also nonfiction but with great storytelling.
