how are you personally managing the fact that unsustainably high anxiety is a reasonable response to the current period we are living in?

it's interesting how every outlet believes that highlighting the best deals on amazon is a valuable service but they don't believe that accurately explaining how terrible things are and who is responsible for the horrors is a valuable service, even though there's high demand for the latter too!

Your power bill is going to triple and there is no end in sight, because of AI. That's the story. When people shrug off "it's not that bad" this is the harm. There are many others too! But this one is personal to every adult.

Bloomberg research found wholesale electricity up ~270% in areas near data centers

It doesn't seem like nearly enough people are taking it seriously

One A.I. image isn't too much energy, but 5 million videos? Per day/hour/minute whatever. It's not sustainable

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

at the end of a day we still live in a world where some things are possible, some things are not, and there's a lot of things that may be possible with high error rates. and product makers should be focused on mapping that terrain! not dreaming up magical nonexistent computers!
winston.cc
but in no way whatsoever has that changed what the underlying software is capable of doing, and what computers are overall able to do. some things that were hard (open-ended data analysis) are easier. some things that were easy (math) are now... hard? it's just annoying.

however, all of those buttons and UX and IA and affordances also served as goddamned _guardrails_ that defined (clearly or not) what is achievable and what isn't.

and the problem we're facing now is that plain language has no fucking guardrails. you can say anything! and the computer will respond!
winston.cc
LLMs are—at their very best—more flexible interfaces for existing computer software. instead of humans having to intentionally design and build all the buttons and interfaces, now the computer can theoretically just respond to plain-language inputs.

the ai boom feels a lot like the single-page app boom in that a shit ton of people believed that the world of possibility was ripped entirely open because one single problem in computer science became a little easier

to the person standing on a bridge over I-94 in St. Paul waving a Palestinian flag as the rush hour traffic streamed by: ily. thanks for the small burst of hope.

wonder what a day with good news would feel like

where is the best place to go (is there a best place) capturing all the AI research papers with some sort of signal as to how important the industry is taking them?

like, i would like to read the lit on context engineering and "reasoning" models. i would like a place to start.

i am not a doomer on bsky but i am thinking about how to stay connected to various comrades on here as a contingency plan. i'm trying to publish more on my blog and i have contact info listed there as a start winstonhearn.com

it's just genuinely difficult to make sense of how complex, opaque systems work in real time when you have many humans interacting with them in creative and limit-pushing ways
