Negative reinforcement may work on some males. With females it just demoralizes us. Negative reinforcement by degrading, insulting and name calling is just role modeling abuse. Make them do a task repetitively or do push-ups is more effective. You don’t teach discipline by being undisciplined.

My drill sergeant never had to employ that type of behavior. People who need to yell and use negative reinforcement do not have leadership ability. My drill sergeant was tough, smart and totally STRAC. I wanted to be just like him. My DI lead by role modeling.

The whole idea that drill sergeants need to scream, cuss, and physically violate recruits is so backwards. No one respects a screaming, raging, out of control lunatic. He is developing a rape culture in the military. Males get raped as well as women.
