Indie micro-studio born out of literally choosing the road less traveled, forged in lessons learnt the hard way, and making games that have an impact.

We joined our first game jam in April 2023. We had no right to think we could actually make a complete game: we were two newbies who’d never done more than follow some tutorials or make some almost decent pixel art. And you know what? We kind of pulled it off.

This seemed feasible, and I could use tutorials as tools to fill in the gaps between the things I already knew how to do, rather than using them as a crutch. Most importantly, we could test to see if we could actually execute this strategy.

I needed to make the jump from not being able to make games by myself without a tutorial holding my hand step-by-step, This transition is a crucial step in becoming a game dev, but when to take the plunge?

I had no idea pixel art would be the gateway drug to a much bigger world of game dev:

On one hand you’re trying to stay competitive in a world where it feels like everyone’s using AI, or will be soon. On the other, you have to deal with constant AI suspicion as it gets harder to tell what’s human generated and what isn’t.

Our studio's origin story started while we were traveling around South America in a camper van. In our latest blog we talk about the realities of Living the Dream, and what really happens when you try to pursue adventure while working at the same time.

Every choice branches. Every branch needs follow-up. Every follow-up creates more branches. I wanted meaningful choices, for the player to feel like their decisions mattered. But "meaningful" quickly became "impossible to manage.”

Here's what you learn when you're locked in a wooden cabin for fourteen days: every detail becomes fascinating. So we watched termites. When those two weeks finally ended, we practically ran into the forest. And that's when the idea came. thewonderingvagabond.com/category/blog/

Maybe. But we think people will be interested in our story, something that is based on our real, lived experience, warts and all. And they’ll be excited to choose something that matters, in an online world optimized for sameness and commercial viability.

Join us on the often messy journey of pursuing a creative dream. All are welcome, but especially anyone who’s ever dreamed of quitting their 9 to 5 and traveling or swapping their high-paced life for tending a veggie patch in the country. After moving on from pixel art, I started to work with Sketchbook. I found this a pretty easy way to translate my traditional art skills into digital art, though there were plenty of learning curves! I made a few pieces, like this digital painting, to comfortable with the program.

Throwback to my pixel art phase 🎮When I first started out as a game dev I thought pixel art was the way to go. After all, it seemed like that’s what all the indie dev kids were doing! Made some stuff I am still genuinely proud of, but eventually I realized hand-drawn art just clicks better for me. 🖌

Throwback Thursday! Here’s our very first game, Caterpillar Courier made for the LDJAM 53 two years ago. We were two wannabe game devs with zero experience and somehow we managed to pull this off in three days. We won't wait so long this time to share our current project, follow us for updates!
