Bobby Bonilla has gotten a $1.2 million check every July 1 since 2011, but do you know why?

The same math that will help him earn $30 million instead of $6 million can help the rest of us earn more, too!

160 million people have been under heat alerts this week. Extreme heat isn’t just dangerous, it’s also economically costly.

Here's how heat waves reduce worker productivity, especially for those in outdoor and physical labor jobs.

Yes, I’ve been watching #LoveIsland, but not just for the drama.

If you’ve ever watched a recoupling ceremony and thought, “This feels like economics,” you’re not wrong.

Why did we stop buying colorful cars?

In the 1990s, red and green were much more common. Now, nearly 4 out of 5 new cars are black, white, gray, or silver.

📊 Check out the trends and learn the economics behind them: www.mondayeconomist.com/p/car-colors

I had the incredible honor of serving as the VT College of Science Commencement Speaker last week.

I spoke about the need for graduates to stand up for science, not just practice it.

It was a moment I won’t ever forget. Thank you,

When $2 eggs became $5, suddenly $7 eggs didn’t seem so ridiculous.

There’s an economic theory for that—and it might explain why you’re still buying the expensive stuff.

The results? Way more actionable insights. ChatGPT is able to highlight meaningful patterns in student feedback—things I might have suspected but wasn’t sure about implementing.

I'll share the advice it provided for our two open-ended questions:

I've since learned how to refine my prompts. Instead of just asking for a summary, I now ask ChatGPT to:
✅ Act as a pedagogy specialist working for a Center for Teaching & Learning
✅ Analyze key themes in student feedback
✅ Recommend changes to improve my courses

That changed when ChatGPT was released. At first, I simply asked it to summarize the feedback, which was helpful but still a bit surface-level.

Here's are the results I got when I first just asked it to summarize the comments:

I found myself getting too hung up on random personal comments—complaints about my annoying voice or bad attitude (which, for the record, I don’t think I have!).

It made it hard to focus on genuine, constructive feedback. I resonated so much with this comic:

I have an exciting resource for those teaching international trade this semester! I teamed up with @mikecoonomics.bsky.social for this pedagogy note on using Tradle, a fun and insightful geography-based quiz game from the OEC.

We didn't quite double the number of subscribers this year, but we weren't too far off. We started the year with around 3,500 subscribers and finished with just under 6,000!

That's about 50 new people every week!

I've been writing the Monday Morning Economist for four years now and I'm still having just as much fun as I did back when it all started.

Here is a brief reflection on another incredible year of growth and success.

Follow along for a brief recap...

Reading Thanks a Thousand and loving its focus on gratitude, but it reminds me a lot of spontaneous order in economics.

The author reflects on all the work that goes into a cup of coffee, which is a powerful reminder that markets and self-interest make it possible.

I'm excited to be at #SEA2024 this year! Looking forward to panels on teaching, sharing new research with Dusty White, and, best of all, hearing great new research and reconnecting with old friends.

I'll admit that I was really skeptical of the pitch clock when it was introduced, but I have really loved the games I've watched so far this year.

I'm about halfway through Ha-Joon Chang's new book and have really enjoyed it so far. It's a great way to spend a holiday!
