The story of initiation is the groundwork for my young adult slipstream novel THE THIN DOOR, a graphics-rich book-as-toy and journal. Now as an elder, I see the many ways we adults can illuminate that threshold into adulthood.

Human art comes out of our living personal growth, and personal growth only comes out of lived experience. When the writer/poet/artist stops working through experimental changes, the art itself stagnates.

To all members of our government who are still standing: Please hold a HISTORIC TRUTH COMMISSION in the United States capital, a PUBLIC FORUM of truth-telling to the regime. Call out the coup of lies. Publicly. Stream it on social media.

Fight the fire with the firehose of truth.

Why waste any bandwidth on this idiocy?
We could fill space itself with "Conspiracy Theorists Claim that....

Your artwork is beautiful. It has the touch of Art Nouveau or Arts and Crafts, and has that vintage sensibility for love of nature.

Don't sit down. Hang onto the railing and ponder.
Just--DON'T JUMP!

I know the feeling. Slogging through the weeks upon weeks of creative interior book layout, working to make the YA text accessible for reluctant readers...now I face the high terrain of being a marketing genie. Sheesh. Did my pre-born contract include this?

Yes, I do hop between projects--it keeps me engaged and gives me the excuse that perhaps I just have ADHD. Which is negated by by fierce hour after hour after hour of focused editing..because I love being in the flow....

I just ordered proof copies of THE THIN DOOR. This is a shoutout to the two best partners in producing my one-off style:

*Baris Sehri from Athens, Greece, whose bold, energetic cover style stops the viewer mid-glance

*Lisa Kerans, wise, keenly sensitive and gifted book designer

Gratitude!

But I was drawn to the liminal, the story of the journey itself, and what that looks like in the raw realism of our contemporary first world life. I swam in the dark of our brutal times to find a way to use story to open the doors of perception, and the right title emerged: The Thin Door. 7/fini

Then the story edged darker as I wrote deeper into the heart of adolescent despair, and the title became The Outsider’s Guide to the Crash Test Nation. (When you read the book, you will meet the Crash Test Dummy herself.) 6/

When a cluster of glacial erratics—boulders on end with a green roof of old growth pines overhead— anchored itself into the storyline, a lot happened under those trees, and I thought my novel’s title was Shelter Rock Cafe. 5/

One skinny HS dropout skateboarded twelve miles to the workshop until a passing commuter took pity and shaved off 8 miles inside a warm truck cab.

My writer’s mind began to spin a story of a world kids in hard places find their own way home to themselves. 4/

In our architectural metal arts studio in NY’s Hudson Valley, we had a string of the broken-winged, the troubled outsider. It was my partner’s gift to the world and a salve to his own brokenness. I witnessed the impossible lives of teens trying to raise themselves in merciless situations. 3/

But what I heard was the story: a generation of young parents too trapped in the daily urgencies to notice the essential journey of adolescence. Adults not fully grown up ourselves. The rules shifting under our feet—but it was the children who were often betrayed. 2/

As the carpool mom driving an age-range of girls, I heard conversations in the back seat that startled me. Coming from another continent of childhood in the Mennonite time-warp of a late 1800’s ethos, I had assumed that the security of community support was there for everyone. 1/
