Working on creating general tiling normal maps in Substance Painter to be used for detail in any tileable Mat.

Simple setup:

▪️Fill Layer w/Height channel
▪️Use any Alphas or Textures in Painter (black/white)
▪️Drag it to Height input channel in Properties
▪️Export only Normal Map

Although glass is NOT metallic, setting Metallic to 1 for #UE5 Glass is a must.

Otherwise your glass surfaces will look like plastic and less like glass.

Just simply do a test. 0 (left) or 1 (right).

And Metallic set to 1 will always look better.

Set #UE5 Glass Lighting Mode to Surface Translucency Volume (performance) or Forward Shading (higher quality)

▪️Translucency Volume: cheaper option, still allows realistic lighting w/translucent mats

▪️Forward Shading: higher quality translucency, more expensive

In #UE5, set following properties for good looking glass:

▪️Blend Mode: Translucent
▪️Lighting Mode: Surface Translucency Volume or Forward Shading

This doesn’t come cheap & it’s most expensive way to create glass materials BUT it offers the best looking UE5 glass.

In Maya, selecting faces on object by Mat ID is easy

In Hypershade right click on Mat icon & choose Select Objects w/Material

PROBLEM: it selects faces on all objects in scene

But you can run this MEL script & select faces on one object by Mat

Metallic defines if a surface is metal or not metal. Metallic texture should be either black or white. Do not use gray values for Metallic, this will not be physically accurate.

White = Metallic
Black = Not Metallic

in #Maya, anytime you work at component level (faces, edges, vertices), you change the shape of the mesh.

Although the pivot point will remain at it's original location.

So to quickly modify and re-center the pivot point go to Modify > Center Pivot

Here is the best and simple way to blend between 2 Normal Maps in #UE5.

Use BlendAngleCorrectedNormals node.

Then use 2 different Normal Maps.

Great for Macro and Micro detail. But can also be used to add Detail Normals to a surface when you get upclose.
