Rue Umberwick is a curious woman with a seemingly insatiable thirst for knowledge. When she lands her dream job as a personal librarian for the handsome yet aloof Duke of Penrith, she doesn’t think her life can get much better. But the Duke's private library and gallery are more than she expected. A collector of mostly ill gotten and supposedly cursed objects, the Duke has entrusted Rue to keep his secrets. There is said to be a book containing incantations and rituals to bring upon the cataclysm that could destroy the world hidden among his collection. With the begrudging help of her disgruntled new winged ally Corvus, Rue finds herself tasked with finding the book and destroying it before it slides into the wrong hands. However, her unending well of curiosity pulls her into a world of chaos, upending her entire life as she once knew it. Can she complete her task before the darkness catches up to her? Or will she hold the responsibility of a cruel fate in her hands? The resounding chime of the ancient grandfather clock rang out and dragged Rue from her concentration. Five times the bells tolled, signaling the late hour. The librarian's work had yet to be finished, but even staying an extra hour or two wouldn't be enough time to get everything done, and she desperately missed her bed. Defeated and exhausted, Rue shelved the last book on her cart and climbed down the ladder, steadily hooking her boot heels into each step as she descended. Tomorrow would be another day, she reminded herself as she gathered her things and arranged them in her satchel bag. Rue moved to the far wall of the library and ran her fingers along the wall, feeling for the tell-tale seam that hid one of the many secret passage doors. "Aha," she murmured, fingers finding purchase in the practically invisible indent. With an ear pressed to the wall, Rue waited for the familiar click of the locking mechanism. The wall slid open, revealing a barely lit winding tunnel. The opening to the passage was tall enough for her to step inside without crouching as she entered. Rue slid the wall shut behind her and headed down the dim corridor toward the main area of the duke's manor. The passageway itself was rough in appearance. Crumbling foundation exposed through haphazard patches and littered with cobwebs and the corpses of dead insects, though these were mostly an afterthought as a means to an entrance to the hidden library she spent most of her days in.

The shadow slipped away once more, but this time Rue turned the other way, hoping to cut whatever — or whoever — this was off before they could get away. It was a dead end. The shadow had disappeared, vanishing into thin air but now Rue found herself standing before the ominous iron door. Her heart hammered with fear against her ribs, breaths coming out in harsh and almost panicked pants. Did that figure lead her here? But why?

The cold, biting wind no longer permeated her skin. “Who are you?” she whispered, trying to make sense of his blurred features.
