Honoured to have seen the OG Broadway cast of #Hadestown in London yesterday. Live changing

Less than a year to shoot and do post-production. Those poor VFX artists

Here is my final ranking of the 14 movies I saw at Film Festival Oostende. The smaller movies with meaningful stories won out over some of the bigger Hollywood pieces #FFO25

Saturday Night - Jason Reitman

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The pace in this movie is amazing, it never stops. While I enjoyed it, I think Americans or people who know who all these people are, will have an even better experience.

Hard Truths - Mike Leigh

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Maybe visually not the most special film, but it makes it up with the script and its performances. There is a constant tension, amazingly carried by Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Definitely check it out if you get the chance

A Complete Unknown - James Mangold

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My expectations were not high, so I was actually really surprised to love this. A great indication: I did not look at my watch once. Does it have a big message or meaning? No, but Timothée is brilliant and the film moves like a train. Very entertaining

Soft Leaves - Miwako Van Weyenberg

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Didn’t expect this one to hit so hard. The story is well written with so many layers, but I think the directing is my favourite part. The silences are deafening, and the way acting is brought is so understated. Masterpiece

Ernest Cole: Lost and Found - Raoul Peck

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 I love seeing documentaries about people or subjects I don’t know. The subjects in this movie are very relevant, but the story has difficulty focussing which makes it feel a bit messy. Still definitely one to to watch

Piece By Piece - Morgan Neville

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 It really is the time of novel, different thinking biopics, but compared to Better Man this felt a little more hollow. Still entertaining, and the Lego was definitely a good choice.

All We Imagine As Light - Payal Kapadia

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This movie was incredible. A beautiful story about two women traversing love and meaning all while giving us an amazing view of Mumbai. The emotions really creep up on you and reach a culmination with the beautiful soundtrack by Topshe

Queer - Luca Guadagnino

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 There is a part of me that really likes this movie. It’s beautifully shot with great performances. The only negatives: the main character is ery unlikeable and the story lost me a bit in the third act. The last hour almost seems like a different movie altogether.

Waves - Jiří Mádl

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 A very solid historical film about resistance to the Soviet regime in Czechoslovakia. It took a while for the story to find its footing, but it definitely got there in the end. Strong performances and decently made.

The Seed of the Sacred Fig - Mohammad Rasoulof

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This film is equally thrilling as it is meaningfull. It beautifully shows the divide between generations and the difficult fight against a patriarchal regime. The movie clearly takes a stance and brings it with such clarity. Oscar-worthy

The Brutalist - Brady Corbet

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Expectations were high, and although this is a very well and beautifully crafted film, in the end I felt fairly unmoved. The sprinkle of zionism didn’t help either. We’ll see what I think after a second viewing.

Sing Sing - Greg Kwedar

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 This movie is basically perfect. The joy, the hope, the emotional depth … such an important film. Collan Domingo is brilliant and deserves that Oscar, but don’t sleep on Clarence Maclin who is maybe equally as amazing.
February 2, 2025 at 12:12 PM
La Cocina - Alonso Ruizpalacios

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Realistic or not, La Cocina is a beautiful rollercoaster of a restaurant film full of drama and laughs. We get to see a multicultural world full of dreams, frustration, and relationships beautifully put to film.
February 1, 2025 at 6:41 PM
Black Box Diaries - Chiori Itō

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The movie not only shows how difficult it is as a victim of sexual assault in Japan, but also heartbreakingly shows the immens mental strain. Even many years after the start of the MeToo movement, Chiori’s story still feels relevant. Strong story, expertly told.
