Hi to all the new folks! My spouse and I, along with our children, live in rural Virginia where we raise goats, rabbits, & chickens (& sometimes hogs) as well as most of our own produce to provide our family with clean food while minimizing our impact on the earth. #SmallFarmLife
Black and white nubian billy goat with floppy ears standing in some hay and staring at the camera with his rectangular pupils. A retaining wall made of cinder blocks is to his left, and you can sort of see the torso of a black kiko nanny goat behind him.

So good! And of course the rendered fat adds that extra flavor when sauteing veggies, or making a quiche crust, corn bread, frying eggs, whatever.

Hogs eat a lot of food, humans waste a lot of food, figured why not try to source as much wasted food as possible to cut feed costs and fill my freezers with delicious pork!

This mangalitsa bacon came from hogs raised primarily on free food - spent grain from a local brewery, discarded fruits & veggies from local grocery stores & farm stands, dried fruits & nuts from a wholesale distributor, peanut skins from a local plant. Waste not. 🍽️🐖🥓 #SmallFarmLife
Fatty strips of raw mangalitsa bacon on a wire rack in a rimmed baking sheet on a gray countertop Cooked mangalitsa bacon strips just out of the oven on a wire rack in a rimmed baking sheet Pint mason jar on a gray countertop, a small fine mesh sieve sits atop it with a paper towel filter so the bacon fat can pass through and the solids get filtered out

Adds an extra layer of fun to torching weeds...

It works, sort of... But I always feel like I'm about to take a trip to the emergency room whenever I hook it up to the propane 🙃

I have one and I hate it. Piece of shit cheapo unit I bought 8 years ago at Harbor Freight. I don't even know the brand of it.

Yes! They're great as cut flowers too, and then after a few days you can just harvest the seeds right off the kitchen table 😅

Once again, the bees are absolutely loving the coxcombs we planted. I love them all - the pointy ones, the flat ones, and especially the brainy looking ones🌱🐝
Crinkly, brainy looking yellow coxcomb with some pink ones and pale yellow ones nearby I don't know what color this is. Pink? Peach? Fuchsia? It's a coxcomb with some pointy bits and a flat flower, a bumblebee is getting some good pollen from the flat flower. Pointy coxcomb in a sea of other coxcombs with a bumblebee collecting pollen

As soon as I walked into the barn to snap a photo of him he thought it was time for pets. So of course I had to oblige. #SmallFarmLife

I kinda want the Jays to win the World Series just so our current administration can have a hissy fit about a Canadian team beating us at our own national pastime.

Also my team has been out of it since the beginning of the season 😅

I'm definitely fortunate to have multiple kids with the same person, makes things a hell of a lot easier for everyone. Glad I didn't have any or she didn't have any with exes, although we'd have found a way to make it work.

Who knows what the US/world situation will be when mine are adults, but fortunately we've got some land out near the mountains they can build on if they choose. Some of them long for the city life though...

I don't mind paying a shop for what I can't do, they obviously need to pay their workers a fair wage and the overhead of rent, insurance, tools, etc. But for stuff I can do myself I'm gonna save a few hundred or thousand bucks.

That's one word for it. Cheapskate is another 😅
wpierce.bsky.social
Man, I've got 5 kids aged 5-13 I need to hang onto hope that things will get easier 😅
wpierce.bsky.social
Got a plant hanging in the barn myself, need to harvest a couple more too but damn where does the time go

Pain is definitely not worth mediocre pizza. Is anything?
wpierce.bsky.social
Gotta resort to homemade pies
Veggie pizza with peppers & onions from the garden and chevre from our goats Half pepperoni half cheese pizza

She wasn't raised in NYC but pretty close in Westchester. Not quite as far out as Rome but I'm sure Rome has way better pies than what we can get even in the cities here in VA. There's a decent spot in Richmond but it's definitely not NY pizza, and almost an hour away...

They hate it when country artists sing about anything other than god, guns, lifted trucks, and chicks in cutoff denim shorts.

I've enjoyed his music on the sidelines, not a hater or a rabid fan, but always respected the hell out of him for being an independent artist carving out his own path.

Man, I wish I could get good pizza where I am but bumfuck VA just doesn't have it. Hence why I make my own (plus I married a NYer who is VERY opinionated about pizza...)
