Cool to see how standards like @IIIF encourage the development of new tools.

I've been playing with AllMaps to georeference SLV maps that are available via @IIIF. Here's a set of maps of the Melbourne CBD created for fire insurance in the 1920s. https://viewer.allmaps.org/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fannotations.allmaps.org%2Fmanifests%2F628c216109f482f1 Hold down 'b' to remove […]

Currently wondering how I can get to Edinburgh next June...

So yeah, I'm re-OCRing the Sands and Macdougall images. It wasn't so much a problem with the quality of the OCR as the difficulties of getting text from PDFs in columns. Tesseract does a pretty good job with the columns, so it's easier just to do it all again. It'll take a while, but I don't mind.

I think it's useful, but it still seems very much focused on images. Personally I'd to see it broadened out to explicitly include access to the full range of heritage data types in machine-readable forms. And at a range of scales.

The TAROCH Coalition (convened by Creative Commons) have issued an Open Heritage Statement to "to affirm shared values, identify barriers to access, and champion the power of open heritage to spark creativity, strengthen cultural rights, and support sustainable futures" […]

@oz-penguin.bsky.social The images in the PDFs have already been converted to bi-tonal.
wragge.hcommons.social.ap.brid.gy
The first question is whether the text in the PDFs is worth saving, or whether I should re-OCR. The PDFs contain good bitonal images, so OCRing them should be pretty easy. That's what I did for the Tas directories: https://glam-workbench.net/libraries-tasmania/

Today in my #slvresidency, I'm going to have a look at the Sands & Macdougall directories: https://find.slv.vic.gov.au/discovery/collectionDiscovery?vid=61SLV_INST:SLV&collectionId=81213035910007636 I've previously converted NSW & TAS directories to full-text searchable databases, so I'm […]

Catching up on some blogging for my #slvresidency ... Here's a post about some work I did a couple of weeks back creating bounding boxes for parish maps from the point, size, and scale metadata. https://updates.timsherratt.org/2025/10/06/creating-bounding-boxes-for-parish.html #maps #libraries […]

Heading home after two weeks onsite for my #slvresidency. I've got a long list of things to work on for the next couple of months before I head back to Melbourne to wrap things up.

Today in my #slvresidency I recorded a hybrid video/screencast that's really a cut down version of the 'hacking the library' workshop I gave yesterday. Coming soon to the SLV LAB's video feeds!

Today in my #slvresidency I led a Code Club workshop where I encouraged SLV staff to hack their own website. We explored how bookmarklets and userscripts can be used to integrate new information, add new functions, and experiment with new possibilities. The slides are here […]

Tomorrow it's Code Club, then on Friday I'm recording a video/screencast. Must admit I'm starting to feel a bit worn out. Being at the SLV is great fun, but I'm looking forward to heading home on Saturday...

Another fun userscript to play around with in the Code Club workshop tomorrow -- this one lets you create an easter egg hunt amongst the SLV digitised collections. It's just a template really to suggest some possibilities... https://gist.github.com/wragge/ebc00790f87e83128f68d992be878dc1

@Airminded Hi Brett, how about 3.30 at Mr Tulk? I just got a pass so I can finally move around the building!

It's primarily a demo for the 'hacking the library' Code Club workshop I'll be running for SLV staff later this week, but it could be a useful pattern to include elsewhere.
