I'd have totally been okay with them being connected to him if that's what they wanted, but I was planning on having him be someone they didnt really know. (He'd been evaporated - or in the case of a no-death game, temporarily absorbed, by a goo monster that was coming up from drains)

Good question! They knew they were exploring supernatural events at a high school in the 80s, but they said they would have wanted to know that they would be investigating the disappearance of a football player from the homecoming game.

A first-time TTRPG player told me that they wished they'd known the hook along with the genre and setting before creating a character. (I usually save the hook for an opening-scene demo where they learn about the game and world.) Do y'all have thoughts on pros and cons of before- vs in-game hooks?

THIS makes me REALLY happy!!

Check out Jaclyn's blog post about playing D&D with their toddler!

This is a great account of how playing TTRPGs with young kids works, and I am also thrilled that TTRPGkids had some influence and for the StoryGuider shoutout. Thank you Jaclyn for writing this!

Clickbait title aside, I've been looking forward to playing TTRPGs with my little one since I was pregnant. @ttrpgkids.com showed me this was possible, and I've relied greatly on their insights. You can read about my experience (and their games) here: www.youngdragonslayers.com/d-and-d-vide...
How I Played D&D With My Toddler
For players of all ages, there are a ton of benefits to Dungeons & Dragons (and games like it). But this is even more true for young players, who are in a prime stage to learn social emotional l...

Something that just blows my mind is how you can just talk to your FLGS or LBS and just... get your indie game on their tables and shelves, and into the hands of eager players!

And when you do it as a collective, you can build a community around your art!

I got to run one of these for Tiny Dragon (their first TTRPG - more details on how it went later this week)! Built for the needs and interests of young children, these games are perfect for introducing TTRPGs, building SEL skills, and creating bonding time with family and friends.

Yes!! I remember my mom being really impressed that we had learned words like "facade" and "accuracy" through Pokemon. Grades act as a sort of stand-in for intrinsic motivation to learn, which comes naturally when there's already interest, like with beloved games! Fandom teaching for the win.

Sometimes you come across a project that simply demands to be shared, and to be shared with diligence and care. This was certainly one of them! I'm glad to have done it some justice.

After interviewing @LucasZellers.bsky.social for this article, I was filled with evangelical zeal. Thoughtful engagement with 5e! Scientific inquiry and accuracy! Conservationist principles built into the design! I dearly hope I did the Book of Extinction justice:
Use DND To Teach Biology and Conservationism With This Monster Manual
Teachers, parents, and others are wondering how to teach biology in a fun way. The game of Dungeons & Dragons has already been used to teach social emotional learning, sign language, history, and more. Why not use D&D to teach biology and conservation? Mage Hand Press, creator of custom D&D content, teamed up with the Center for Biological Diversity, scientific advocate of endangered species, to create a totally unique monster manual. In this book, you won’t find orcs, goblins, or kobolds. Instead, each “monster” is inspired by a real-world extinct animal. The Book of Extinction has two versions for each entry. One is the actual creature from our world: its history, biology, and the circumstances leading to its extinction. The other is a creature with lore, magic, and abilities that are inspired by the real-world creature but more suited to the world of D&D. As a team of educators, parents, therapists, and youth workers bringing D&D to young players, we’re always looking out for awesome D&D resources for teachers, and we fell in love with this one immediately. We got to chat with Lucas Zellers, the lead writer for the Book of Extinction, about his journey from D&D player to honorary conservationist.

Which is, as many have pointed out, IN THE DESIGN of every genAI that I've seen
brendelbored.bsky.social
This is in the replies and it demonstrates a real issue which is if you find profundity from an AI, you’re responding to something profound a human being wrote that was vacuumed up and what ends up happening is you thank AI and not only don’t thank the person, you have no idea they were involved

I thought this sounded familiar and it turns out it literally just found an old George RR
Martin quote and wrote a short story out of it:
George R.R. Martin > Quotes > Quotable Quote (?)
"I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners.
The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. They know how many rooms are going to be in the house, what kind of roof they're going to have, where the wires are going to run, what kind of plumbing there's going to be. They have the whole thing
designed and blueprinted out before they even nail the first board up. The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it. They kind of know what seed it is, they know if planted a fantasy seed or mystery seed or whatever. But as the plant comes up and they water it, they don't know how many branches it's going to have, they find out as it grows. And I'm much more a gardener than an architect."

Despite the overwhelmingly supportive response to my anger at Obojima, it seems some folks still really don't understand.

I'm going to say this as plainly as possible:

You can enjoy Japanese culture, but you cannot make it your own.

Japan gives freely of so much of its culture, but it's a loan. 🧵

Indiana is a hostile place to trans people and every single one of you I saw at GenCon are the bravest and most beautiful people in the world and I'm glad we were out there visible and bold in the face of this cruel and heartless world. Each of you were a walking balm of gold out there.
