A view from Wrexham’s Member of Parliament
Wrexham.com has invited local Members of Parliament and Members of the Senedd to write a monthly article with updates on their work in their respective Parliaments and closer to home – you can find them all here. In this month's column, Andrew Ranger MP said: September sees pupils returning to school and MPs back in Westminster having spent the summer in their constituencies. It had been great to be in Wrexham to experience everything from the Eisteddfod and AfroFiesta to meeting constituents from Minera to Worthenbury. Our hospitality businesses are an essential part of the high street in the city centre and across the constituency.

Wrexham Council says grass cutting targets met but weeds remain a challenge
Wrexham Council says it has met its grass cutting targets this year, with fewer complaints received from the public about untidy spaces. The authority is responsible for maintaining and cutting more than four million square metres of grass and hedgerows during each maintenance cycle. This covers council-owned public open spaces, housing estates and, on behalf of the North and Mid-Wales Trunk Road Agency and Welsh Government and parts of the trunk road network. Work is carried out using a mix of a large tractor - which covers 1.5 million square metres - alongside strimming, box-mowing and ride-on cutting.

Welsh cricket clubs ‘stumped’ by housing developments
Welsh cricket clubs are being hit for six-figure bills to cover the cost of safety netting due to housing developments springing up near their grounds, the sport’s governing body warned. Barry Cawte, chief executive of Cricket Wales, said such planning decisions are threatening the viability and safety of cricket clubs across the country. Mr Cawte criticised a lack of guidance and accountability in the planning process as he wrote to the Senedd’s culture and sport committee outlining cricket clubs’ concerns. He said one of the most pressing issues is the increasing frequency of developments being approved adjacent to cricket grounds and the danger of stray balls.

Campaigners call for cap on donations after Vaughan Gething row
Campaigners have called for a £10,000 cap on political donations following controversy over a £200,000 donation that led to the downfall of former first minister Vaughan Gething. Mr Gething, who broke no rules, was forced to stand down after accepting the donation from a convicted polluter’s company during the 2024 Welsh Labour leadership race. Before resigning, the former first minister – who outspent rival Jeremy Miles by £254,600 to £61,800 – urged the Senedd’s standards committee to look into reforming donation rules. Now, in evidence to the committee’s resulting inquiry, witnesses have warned a lack of limits on donations, and a high threshold for reporting, risk damaging public confidence.

“Changing behaviours remains a significant challenge” to recycling rates in Wrexham
Wrexham Council has missed its recycling target for 2024/25 and could face a fine of more than £750,000. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic Wrexham was amongst the top performing councils in Wales, with a recycling rate of 69.2 per cent. But it has struggled to retain these levels and has been on a downward trajectory in recent years. The drop in recycling levels in Wrexham has been put down to 'changing behaviours' and the lack of caddies for more than 50% of the county borough.

London Heliport ‘key’ to Wales Air Ambulance lifesaving transfers
One of the world’s busiest heliports is playing a ‘key role’ in helping the Wales Air Ambulance to save more lives. The heliport, based at Battersea opposite Chelsea Harbour, is one of the busiest in the world. Several times a year it provides access for Welsh Air Ambulance crews transferring patients — often children — to London’s specialist hospitals. Wales Air Ambulance attends around 3,500 patients annually. While some hospitals in the capital have their own helipads, they are usually reserved for trauma cases and do not allow helicopters to remain for extended periods.
