Just finished "The Count of Monte Cristo," by Alexandre Dumas [père]. At times it reminded me of a very long episode of The Californians.

The car that left those skid marks ended up in the grassy area at right, after swerving around another car that had stopped for me. I was just behind the yellow bollards, checking for traffic from the other direction, when I heard the squealing tires.
