Also try The Agency (or the French original The Bureau) for this style.

I remember him speaking extremely proudly of you!

Nothing to do with your post, but about 34 years ago your dad hired me and supported me through tenure. I’m forever grateful. :-)

Because of the actions of one man. Not necessarily the best thing to count on.

Well, he’s right about one thing… it’s great if conservatives start buying EVs.

The book from which it’s adapted is good, too.

I’ve read about half of Robert Harris’s stuff. Most of it is historical fiction of one sort or another. This is a slightly different take on that theme.

It’s pretty much all the Departments. Pretty much all the “probationary” employees, completely without regard of merit or necessity.

You guys need to start a spy-series offshoot to go with Marvel and the Stars Trek and Wars! (Yeah, ok I know there are only so many hours in the day, but there are a bunch of good recent spy shows!)

90% of the “personal” items I find interesting could be on Facebook. There is some institutional stuff I think is worthwhile. Couldn’t care less if I ever see another “I’m thrilled to announce” post again.

That sucks. But offshore jobs don’t require H1Bs… eliminating H1Bs isn’t going to stop the offshoring of jobs to cheaper labor. Im not sure what the solution is for that problem.

I endorse the latter point, but the first is a stretch.

FWIW, variations on “computer science” are the fastest growing major(s) by far at many, many universities. It’s actually difficult for universities and govt labs to hire graduate degree holders because the private market pays so much more typically (often w/o the graduate degree).

IIRC, some countries have a “you have to show no one domestic can/will do the job first” requirement. That would be painful, but a potential legit middle position.
December 29, 2024 at 11:25 PM
I’m not in the computer industry, which obviously dominates these statistics, but in my (STEM) area, where we’re routinely looking only for people with graduate degrees, losing the H1B would be a problem. NOT because they drive the cost of labor down, but because of a small available pool.

I do too. Threads started well but is now at least as toxic in my engagement as the old place. (Not neonazis, but neo-nasty). Plus all that bot traffic.

I’m not going to defend her policies, but is this so different than if she had been a movie (or football!) executive?

At least he has a Costco membership.

You can’t charge people to learn physics and then sing Dylan songs all day in class, even if that doesn’t violate 1A. It’s a violation of professional ethics.

Academic freedom doesn’t protect non-germane speech in class, or at least so I was always told. I know it might be gray in some contexts, but I have a hard time seeing how knowing how a person votes is *ever* germane to class.

It’s much more friends chatting for me than this sort of social media. And I haven’t had too much problem silencing garbage…that took works pretty well. Also, I’m of the demographic that uses it still. Born in 64.
