I can remember seeing this as a kid, the left foot on the statue was always shiny, it was good luck to touch it.

Yeah. Though I suppose the old PCC streetcars (there was an overlap period w new and old just like the recent changeover), some of the tech, and denuded-seeming skyline pics make it seem older (or just ancient at this point) to fresh eyes.
