Found this little guy clinging to a Mexican Heather branch underneath the oak leaf mulch. My guess is that he emerged during the early false spring and then tried to escape the ensuing freeze by taking refuge in the mulch. Apple photo identifies it as an eastern carpenter bee.

Cleaning out the winter mulch from the gate gardens and was pleasantly surprised to see that the Mexican Heather is still alive. Going to transfer that mulch to Connie blueberry bushes.
