Prologue 14th of Vinatman, 1652 Age of Enlightenment As the winter winds blew across the countryside–through snow-covered trees and white tipped hills–a lone horse drawn coach strolled down the frigid highway outside the holy city. Decorated with gold-plated lattice over a body of green oak wood, the elegant vehicle rode in luxury: extravagant silken cushion and pillows as well as warm blankets assured that its passengers would ride comfortably no matter the distance. At the helm of the coach, steering its four large Singardian draughts, was the young Corporal Taram Greybram, an Elven man in his early forties with dark violet skin, hazy gray eyes, and a think black moustache. He wore the thick green and maroon woolen coat of Singard’s most elite crownsguard as well as a pair of thick leather gloves and riding boots. Adorned on his left shoulder was a golden epaulette and a single golden tassel denoting his rank. Laying on the bench at his side was a master-crafted musket adorned with a silver-dusted bayonet, and on his hip was strapped a Singardian falchion. The passengers of such a luxurious trip were three Galdic Maidens of the Lionbrand Temple. Liza Valen, the Maiden Superior, was just under ninety years old with long shimmering silver hair she’d tied into a braid which draped over her shoulder, and dark, emerald eyes. Though older than even the oldest human, Liza still retained a youthful spirit and beauty. Sister Magda Mosvand was second to Liza in both age and experience; she had long, curly black hair that she’d often kept tied up into a tight bun. The third was Sister Claire Siér, the newest maiden to join their temple’s conclave, only being with them for a little over a year, who wore a dainty, youthful smile and had long pale-blonde hair that draped down her back.

Honestly, this is probably a scene that's either going to be moved to a later part in the story, because as I was writing it, I realized, "There is no way this information would or should be out yet." But, I still like the scene.

She couldn’t believe what the gazette had written. Such a headline would cause mass panic if true; they’d never publish such an obvious falsehood, no matter how desperate they were to outsell their competitors. This story had to have some inkling of truth to it. Her ink-stained fingertips traced the words as her eyes darted across the page; she read about the report given by a local watchman that he and his partner had found a woman fleeing in distress who’d claimed to see an orc. The two watchmen then stumbled upon a hooded figure they believed to be the orc; one went back to report the incident and get further assistance, while the other stayed to keep an eye on things. Unfortunately, when the second watchman didn’t return, the first lead a small number of officers back to the scene where they found the second near dead in the streets, his uniformed scorched, and his body severely burned.

It cocked its head as cats are known to do and pawed up at me as if wanting to play. I backed away quickly, more confused than scared—and don’t give me that look, boy; I wasn’t—but before I could do anything else, I heard the lady Josephine whistle back near the cottage. The kitten immediately lost interest with me and began sauntering towards the witch’s voice. When I followed the small spectral creature back to the cottage, I saw the lady Josephine holding another kitten—speckled with black, orange, and white fur—in her arms, scratching it behind its ears. What’s more, there were five more ghost kittens all playing with one another in the shade of the sargadis tree. The little orange kit that had found me was making its way back to the others, and as it approached, began to slow itself and prowl around, waiting to strike.

“No can do, mademoiselle,” said the man. “Zere are rules in place. If you’d like, you can come back tomorrow! We will be here all week! Bring your friends and children zen, and zere will be no problem!” Asta couldn’t just leave. She wanted—needed—to see what was inside. The music seemingly grew louder and louder, and she felt something within her start to swell alongside the music. She felt a bile taste on her tongue as she spoke, “oh, plEAsE lET mE In.”

It's been a while! I've taken a break after one of the most stressful stretches of time for me, but now I feel comfortable enough to write again!
His eyes met hers, and for a moment, she thought Pottran had developed that ability to seemingly communicate without words. As he peered down at her through his thin-rimmed spectacles, she was certain she could hear him say: “Don’t you worry, jackielass; I’ve got me a plan.” Pottran turned his attention to the men and said, “Think on it, and if you change your minds, we’ll be departed early sunrise tomorrow mornin’. If we don’t sees ya, we’ll have our answer.” He finished off his pair of drinks and stood without waiting for a response, leaving behind the four coins.

Today, I begin the final installment of His Dark Materials: The Amber Spyglass. I began this journey at the tail end of last year, and after a small break, the time to end it has come.

Pottran smiled wide and patted Emecar on the shoulder with one of his massive hands; it felt like a metal vice clamping down on him. “I knew you would,” said the dwarf. “A man who knows and swears by the ideal of Adakar Azukor is a man I can trust.” It was so strange to hear another person speak of the legendary Dawnking whom Emecar had been so inspired by. In a way, it made him anxious: what if the story Liza had told him all those years ago had been a lie? What if the Dawnking was a tyrant who ruled viciously and cruelly? They’d no books about him back in the temple; in a sense, Emecar always wondered if the story was even a real story to begin with, or if it was just something she’d made up that very day.

I didn't even need to check to know that I never actually used synchronize, but harmonize is close enough
“No offense taken,” said Asta, gently bowing her head. She gave the man his drink as the gnome quickly began asking for a second; as he did, Asta heard the human begin humming: jaunty and upbeat, but not a tune she recognized. She rather liked the song, and though she wasn’t familiar with it, she found herself humming along with the man, harmonizing as if she’d known it for years.

What’s worse, the gremlins started chucking their rocks at me again! And this time, I didn’t have the luxury to try and dodge out of the way, so all I could do was try and protect my head as they pelted me from a distance and watch my feet as to not trip over any sudden debris! “Accursed beasts,” I called out, “is there no respect?” If you could imagine, there was none.

Maestro Gravelle made his way through the anxious crowd of elves and stood beside the young human boy, gently resting a hand on his shoulder. “Everyone, this is Adam Lumair. Now, I know this is uncouth, but I’m here to tell you that just as our little Asta here as a voice unlike any other, young Adam here is one of the most gifted pianists of the age!” He stood proud, his grip tightening on the boy’s shoulder. “It is my professional opinion that these two will make a most excellent match! A true divined by Lady Driel, I dare say!”

The man faded back into the darkness as eyes swirled around Rukifelth, drowning him in the blood of his victims. Rukifelth felt himself pulled deeper and deeper into the ocean of darkness, and it seemed the harder he tried to thrash about to escape, the stronger his binds became. He closed his eyes hoping to wake from this nightmare, and as he did, he felt the world around him grow quiet and soft. He opened his eyes, hoping he was back home, but instead, he was in a dark room illuminated by a small lamp.

I'm surprised in all 3 of my main WIPs, this is the only use of the word shame. I definitely thought this was a word I used more.
From back the way I came, I heard the entourage of gobkin following behind. Morrigan began to fly up and around the canyon’s steep cliff when she found a small perch and stared down at me with her beady green eyes. She gave a loud caw, and that rubbed me the wrong way, so I took a small rock at my feet and chucked it at the bird. I didn’t hit it, of course, and said, “You’ve led me to my death, you damned creature! I can’t…” I’m ashamed to admit that in my frazzled state, it took me a bit longer than I would’ve liked to realize what she was telling me.

“You had her follow me,” I asked. The witch shot me a cold glare and said, “I couldn’t risk you going back to your friend and trekking your way back with reinforcements. I needed to make sure you weren’t a threat.”
