Alrighty, neighborinos! We're in the home stretch of this thing. Next in Pt. XIII, we talk about how the cover came about and I nerdsplain what a comic book cover is (not really).

Thanks for hanging in. Don't let go yet. I'm Audi 5000, G!

We thought we were finished, sans cover, after all that. But I decided we needed one more page. We always loved Alex's monologue in the live-action trailer, which I wrote, ahem! So, we decided to include a revised version of that as our final page.

Once the waterline was revised, we had to clean up some sore thumbs and perspective. Which gave us the page on the right.

The 3D overlay didn't work because there were two buildings in it that are no longer there. So, we went back to hand drawn. We had some issues with water placement and perspective that we needed to sift through. That persisted into the color phase.

The last art page was our overhead Manhattan shot. As I said way back somewhere in this series, NYC was flooded due to a miscalculation in the first sun causing glacier melt, ocean warming, etc. in the northern hemisphere. It took a bit to get this one right. We went from sketch to 3D overlay.

Apologies. That was uncalled for. Here's the actual final page.

In the end, the final page looked like this!
a man in a suit and red bow tie is holding something in his hand

After we settled on the ink, it was time for color.

Then we get the ink revisions. As you can see, there are subtle changes. One big one however was the position of mom. She's sitting up at first. But we wanted her in a more protective position. This was surprisingly hard to get across to Paul. But we eventually go there.

Magellan — our natural protector. Like a few other pages, Rod had to do some draw-overs to better convey to Paul what we wanted. Here's the initial sketch and page layout along with a few draw-overs.

We finally end up with our completed page. Violin!!
January 17, 2026 at 3:51 AM
We did 7 color versions — rough to final. I won't post them all. This involved color changes to the man's suit, G's goggles, people running to convey more urgency, a woman fleeing w/ a baby, people coming toward us, more details, debris, smoke curling off the water, fires, etc.

We agreed Myth was happy to see G & unaware once the attack begins. So, her expression was changed. We changed that. We had G's gun come more out of panel. And Myth was also facing the wrong way coming from Manhattan on the Brooklyn Bridge. In the final ink, we brought scooter closer in the "shot".
January 17, 2026 at 3:51 AM
As you can see, the initial sketch differs quite a bit from the first ink, mainly the position of the characters with Ghengis & the man more out of their panels. We decided to keep G on his scooter, ready to go. You can also see that Myth (G's girl) is more frightened in the ink.

Welp. That's gonna do it for this episode. Next up, Pt. XII: Got Yo'self A Gun and Harris Is A Taint.

Thanks for riding shotgun on this journey.

Final pencil and inks evolution.
January 8, 2026 at 3:51 AM
That brings us to Ill. He's an intelligent kid, cultured, charismatic & knowledgeable for his a 12-year-old. He's also empathetic & loves his pops. But he's afraid of being truly alone (for reasons). His page had the most revisions because of the detail we wanted. Here's the sketch evolution.

Here are the inked and colored pages (final page is on the right). Can you spot the differences... and errors?
January 8, 2026 at 3:51 AM
But to get all that in, we wound up with quite a bit of dialog. Economy of words is a principle of screenwriting and may be even more so for comics. Oops. Very busy page as far as dialog balloons go. Granted these backstories would have way more pages in a graphic novel or 22-page comic.

For Yeti, we wanted to incorporate a few things into their page. Yeti don't mind get bloody as long as others get bloodier & never considers themselves beaten. We also wanted to acknowledge their Tibetan heritage hence Momo & momos. What's the difference, you ask? Internet it. Sketch progression.
January 8, 2026 at 3:51 AM
As to Gloria's page. We wanted her quiet demeanor to come through hence her one line. But that line shows her wisdom because she, at 11, understands what's coming.

On to the next page.

Sure. We could've led with something more explosive, and one could argue that would've been the wiser course of action. But this was/is our first foray into the comic world, so we didn't want to be guilty of our eyes being bigger than our stomachs... or wallets.
