Description of this onion prompted lad in alt text
I got the idea for this creature from interpreting Onion as "layers of defense" from the all-time Shrek quote "Ogres are like Onions ..have layers." A little bit of iteration happened before landing on this, starting with an Onion Knight, and then moving to a Phalanx. Within the Phalanx, I saw an idea that would draw further inspiration from Porcupines, Nodosaurs, Crocodilomorphs & Pseudosuchians, and Komodos. The speculative ecology behind this animal is focused on the idea of a heavily armed and armored predator from some far-off exo-planet that would likely be a hemavore or visceravore. It's wholly jawless with the skull structure being entirely solid, growing into a fine-pointed arrowhead shape. I imagined it would hunt prey items considerably larger than itself by leaping onto them at full force with the head locked forward, releasing digestive enzymes and drinking their prey from the inside out not unlike spiders. The claws sink in for balance and immobility with the quills along its back serving both as a deterrent and touch-sensitive alarm system toward other predators.

Chose to depict S aegypticus for this Ink25 prompt. I don't recall off-hand which specimen(s) this display model was based upon, but SNMNH back in I think '22, '23, had this animal as their centerpiece in a temporary Morocco fossil display
Spinoaurus kinda sorta became the mascot of the relationship with my partner. I was desperate for date ideas when I realized "Dammit, I *like* her" hit me like a truck until I saw this temporary exhibit in my feed. Who knew a 100 million year old non-avian dinosaur would be a great wingman

It's just a weird little guy
I don't even remember all the speculative ecology I came up with for this lad at the time I invented him. My documentation in my creative processes were horrifically poor during 2024, but the one thing I do distinctly remember with this piece was it starting as a sketch on a separate page, drawing a random fractal design, and then using that as a glorified "cross the lines between the dots" coloring page book.

After much convincing from a friend to post my #inktober works and other projects somewhere that isn't a series of small discord servers, I figure I may as well set camp here and try out.

These are my 1st & 22nd pieces in the #inktober2024 series -I know I'm dreadfully late posting these!
I dipped my fingers into light world-building during the Inktober 2024 run, noting down for Backpack the following excerpt: "Crisp air filled her tired lungs - the seasons were changing in these mountains, with remnant summer flowers bracing for the long winter. She gazed into the stretching valley before her after perching her companions on a nearby tree, contemplating which path to go from here. Before long though, exhaustion reached its mark, creating a makeshift bed of gentle grasses and old mountain stone." I didn't realize until working on my INK25 series that, starting as early as the Backpack prompt in this post, I had made a self-insert OC to explore this world I was creating. She became quite an important character for me that I've slowly explored more across 2025 and now into early 26. The associated text for this piece is perhaps among my favorites of that year's notes, only matched by what I wrote for Guidebook: "The pillar cackled as it chased shadows across the surrounding trees and beat back creeping autumn air, bringing warmth and rest to the nonreciprocating ranger."
