Makes me wonder if these industry measurements that they were originally using were created based on games that either didn't do background loading, OR had a lot of small files.

yeah I do! I chop it up and throw it in near the beginning, it adds a mild vegetal flavor to the whole thing!
Alternatively you could cook it down and add it in more than 50% of the way though the cooking time
