In the depths of the Congo River Basin, a monster dwells: the Mokèlé-mbèmbé is one of Africa's most well-known cryptids, essentially a dinosaur-like creature that lives in the waterways, terrorizing humans and animals alike. #WyrdWednesday

In China, it is the tiger, not the lion, that is king: since the development of Chinese writing, the character for ruler, 王, has been noted on the head of tigers via their stripes. As such, they are regal, masculine creatures in Chinese culture. #LegendaryWednesday

Modern historians have suggested that dragons were real to premodern populations due to the presence of fossilized dinosaur bones. Given how close modern dragons look to these bones it is entirely possible, though dragon truthers would very much disagree. #WyrdWednesday

Stolen gems from Hindu idols are a common trope in cursed jewelry stories. The Hope Diamond came from a statue, the Black Orlov Diamond from a statue of Brahma specifically, and the Delhi Purple Sapphire from a shrine of Indra. Maybe colonists shouldn't steal? #MythologyMonday

Imbolg, St Brigid, and the Quickening of the Year
It is 1st February 2026, which means that today is Imbolc (or Imbolg in modern Irish), an ancient Gaelic festival marking the point halfway between the winter solstice and vernal equinox.  In the old pagan calendar, this day is regarded as the first day of spring, as it is roughly the time when the first spring lambs are born, daffodils etc start to appear, and the days get noticeably longer.

Or go sledding.

And pester their parents who are doing remote office work to make hot chocolate.

WRITING TIP: This is an example of “showing not telling” when giving characterization.

The action of stealing flowers from a dead woman is great when you don’t want the audience to feel bad for the character when they are torn apart by monsters or an antihero or an act of god in the next chapter.
