I've even sometimes added relevant info that isn't in the Japanese, since it's relevant to us but not them. (Like including a blurb about "splooting," which isn't a term in Japanese as far as I know, but was relevant to how cats maintain their body temperature.

True. In my case, I've been translating the jargon to the English equivalent since they use different medical terms and reference different things sometimes. Luckily, I know the terms already from previous biology classes and from fostering cats.

It really depends on the mango's audience. For example, Cells at Work:Neko is educational, so I lean towards longer explanations. If I was translating romance, I might leave it as is or shorten it for the flow of the story.
