Until somewhat recently it was most commonly not about oil. Even in trump 1, were he was already quite transactional, he was a lot more politics in his forpol. Now he is just monomaniacally hunting expensive sounding resources.

I disagree with the end of your statement. It is an extremely effective form az of analyzing an important question, just not the one it claims to answer. The question being: "what are the political priorities of NYT columnist?", a group that is influential especially in US liberal elite circles
