Black and white photograph of a K-35 class logging Mikado locomotive. Mikados are a 2-8-2 configuration of locomotive, meaning 2 unpowered wheels on a pivot and suspension set separate from the frame, followed by 8 driven wheels interconnected by a driving rod, then another 2 unpowered trailing wheels. The driving wheels this engine in particular are very small, meaning high torque but low speed. This is helpful when pulling trains up steep hills on the typically steep and curvy tracks often built for log transportation to the mainline railway.
