The entire Ghibli ethos is tied up in the idea of craftsmanship. It's a textual subject of the films (hand carving violins in Whisper of the Heart, for just one example) and the meta work that goes into the films themselves. Their films feature hard workers, and are animated with sweat and tears.

Oldies but Goodies - French is Weird 04 - "Drinks"
Let's have a drink! Of course, if you're French you can have a drink anytime. But we have our traditional one, called L'APÉRO. It's short for aperitif, from the latin aperio, which means to open. It's the drink that opens your apetite. (Image of Cesar saying "Vini Vidi Vici". So before lunch or dinner, people meet for l'apéro (image of Amélie Poulain and Boulet at a bar) and for the first drink, we have to "trinque". Trinquer (verb) means to clink glasses. It's a toast. (It also means "to suffer" for some reason. A french adage even says "les parents boivent, les enfants trinquent" = when parents drink kids suffer (Image of a car wrapped around a tree. A voice says "ow" and the drunken dad answers "hush, daddy's driving")) And yes, you have to clink glasses with EVERYONE at the table, looking them in the eye and without crossing the streams. Don't you DARE drink before this. (Image of a bunch of people looking intensely at each other, clinking glasses and saying "santé") The basic toast is "à ta santé" (to your health). Can be (is often) shorten in "Santé !" (health!) or "à la tienne!" (to yours !) (images showing Boulet drunker and drunker with a bunch of empty pints.) We also say a lot "tchin-tchin", which means "please" in chinese. (But careful: it means penis in japanese) (image of a cute penis with a beret and mustache, holding a beer and saying "santé !") For beer you can ask: UN DEMI (25cl) it means "a half", like in "a half-pint". It's the base standart. UNE PINTE, sometimes called UN SÉRIEUX (a serious)= a pint. It's 50cl. There is also an old format called UN GALOPIN (a brat), mostly for tasting. Tiny 12,5cl. (come on.) DRUNK YET? Congratulations, you are: BOURRÉ (stuffed) (Image of Boulet as a doll) PLEIN (full) (Image of a Boulet made of glass, full of liquid) BEURRÉ (buttered) (Image of Boulet covered with butter) Sometimes you can add an extra comparaison, like "Beurré comme un petit Lu" (Petit Lu is a french biscuit fron Nantes. (Image of a Petit Lu holding a beer) OH NO! YOU DRANK TOO MUCH! NOW YOU ARE SICK! So now you are going to VOMIR (throw up), or less elegant: DÉGUEULER. It literally means "Get out your mouth" but "gueule" is for an animal mouth. For humans we say "bouche". You can also say GERBER (a gerbe being a bunch of flowers), you can also say POSER UNE QUICHE (to put down a quiche) or UNE GALETTE (a crepe) (Images of Amelie Poulain throwing up a bunch of flowers and a quiche) One sure thing: the next day you are going to have LA GUEULE DE BOIS (literally: wooden mouth). Oldies but Goodies - French is Weird 02 - "French Kiss"
A lot of expressions use "french", like "french bread", "a french leave", "french fries"... So it raises the one essential question : How do you french kiss in french ? (image: Boulet and Amelie Poulain kissing in front of the Sacré Cœur. A mime and the Eiffel Tower in the background. Amelie is saying "Ohlàlà monsieur Boulet" There are different types of kisses in France: -La bise to say hello/goodbye. You don't really kiss, we are not savages. It mostly consist in touching cheeks with a "mwa" sound. It's however absurdly complex to understand when and how many times. (image: to people doing "la bise") -Donner un bisou/un baiser. "Give a kiss". Means lips are touching the cheek, the lips, or any other part you judge appropriate to kiss (image: Amelie kissing a foot) but CAREFULLY use "baiser": "un baiser" is a kiss, but "baiser" as a verb means "to have sex" -Embrasser can mean a lot of things, it's the basic way to say "to kiss", which doesn't make any sense because the word itself means "to take in your arms" (image: two people kissing) EXAMPLES: "S'embrasser sous le gui" (to kiss under the mistletoe) / "Je t'embrasse" at the end of a letter or an e-mail ("love&kisses) / "Embrasse tes parents pour moi" ("say hi to your parents for me) Hey! Does that means that "embrasse" is "embrace"? Yes, you can also use it like that. You can "embrasse" your destiny, or the dark side (image: Luke Skywalker screaming.) But Wait... Does that mean that French doesn't have a specific word for the FRENCH KISS? The one with the tongue and all? Well… No. But we have a pretty good slang for this. In France, "to french kiss" is "Rouler une pelle". Which literally means "To toll a shovel" (image: Boulet is putting a shovel in the mouth of Amelie Poulain, who is saying "Ohlàlà monf'eur Boulet") It would come to the similar expression "Rouler un patin" (to roll a rollerskate / ice skate) (Image: Amelie is saying "say haaa" and putting a rollerskate in Boulet's mouth). Sometime you'll also meet "rouler une galoche" (to roll an old shoe. Probably because of the "patin" thing) (Amelie watches Boulet approach with an old shoe and says "oh no", horrified). It would come from "patiner" and "peloter", which both used to mean "to touch with insistance, to caress. We still use "peloter" in this sense. (Image: Amelie is touching Boulet's butt, and he's blushing "Ooh mademoiselle !" I also heard a theory that says it could come from trains, and the shovel to load coal that was shaped like a tongue. But nothing conclusive. (Image: a small shovel of coal is approaching the furnace. The shovel says "you're hot, baby", and the furnace says "Oh, monsieur Boulet ♥" Fun fact, if you try to roule une pelle and get turned down... It's called "se prendre un rateau" ("to get a rake") (image: Boulet walking with a shovel steps on a rake and gets hit on the face when it springs up.)
