I think the problem you’re having is because of your coordinate system. Supervise coordinates are usually done with a angles measured at the center of the sphere. I woo would council moving to that. Keep phi, but with ther theta to be the elevation angle.

The intersection of the sphere with the θ=c plane is a circle with radius sin θ. so the height of the point should be sinθ x sinφ
