Here're the four most popular plants (according to Instagram), which I drew for Dr Sandy Hetherington's plant development paper! I'm really happy with how these turned out, and it was especially interesting to update the look of Horneophyton. #FossilFriday #paleoart #paleobotany
Parasciadopitys-Telemachus tree: A conical christmas tree-shaped tree, with yellowing leaves isin the centre of the image. A callout box in the top right has a close up of a branch with strap-like leaf clusters and two cones attached. On the left is a cone, which is shaped like a thick sausage, with blunt tips and is made up of spiky scales. Above this is a close up of one of the scales, showing off the 5 points it has. Lyginopteris oldhamia: a plant looking similar to a tree fern, with a thick trunk running along the ground before curving up. Roots are growing from its underside and bridge the gap between the stem and the ground when it begins to curve up. The top of the stem has sevral layers of widely spaced leaves. The leaves are large and fern-like, but are bifurcated half way along their lengths into two fronds. Sphenophyllum costae: A horsetail-like plant, with one main stem and two sidestems branching and curving upwards. many rings of leaves line the stem at intervalls amking them look like a pipecleaner. The leaves get smaller as they reach the tips of the stems. Horneophyton lignieri: A plant mad up of clusters of many very thin tall stems which look very spindly. in the top half of the plant they dichotomise multiple times and are tangles within each other. The tip of each stem ends in a Y-shaped pale sporangia which had flat tips. An insert to the left shows a close up of the tubers, which look like the swolen bases of stems and have many rootlets extending off them.
