How are people protesting in the US against Israel’s genocide in Gaza? The US is the #1 supporter of Israel’s genocide against Palestinians, but most people in the US oppose it.

We’re going tomorrow and the weekend with some friends. Will reply after I’ve read what Yawi & Bali said and we’re been to the games.

This said, I think all the things you mentioned are valid and true. Like I said, haven’t read what Yawi & Bali have to say (and I’d definitely take their words as an authority perspective), but criticism I’ve heard has been mostly planning & then of course the tone deaf speeches.

There are certainly plenty of indigenous leaders in Taiwan. Regardless, it should be policy, especially for a first international event, to have indigenous experts knowledgeable about international indigenous affairs be on the speech writing teams, at least on an editorial basis.

Also some problematic speeches by non-indigenous folks. This is something Yawi & Bali have spoken about in past frequently. Really apart from maybe one top gov official (who had assistance from indigenous speech writers,) there really needn’t have been any folks other than indigenous speaking.

I’ve not yet read what Yawi and Bali’s take is on things, but have always found them to provide incredibly helpful & adept insights in their writings and podcast. That said, friends have been saying they haven’t felt there was enough indigenous oversight or participation in planning the event.

The one KMT legislator who did attempt to deliver an English speech actually made all the wrong points like lumping together all the global Indigenous populations by welcoming them "home." I think there's plenty of room for improvement, but there are also good memories and connections being made.

There was decent central government backing, unsure why many ppl felt otherwise. The tourism bureau has been promoting the event overseas, foreign dignitaries were in attendance, and speeches were instantaneously translated between Mandarin and English. Kudos to the opening ceremony host (an Amis).

Not gonna deny some phrasing and categorization were really off, but that seems to be a longstanding CIP issue. Coordination is def a challenge, given this is the inaugural Games with everything planned from scratch. But the joy of the participants are genuine, and reverence for Indigenous cultures
