The comparison of the linguists' answers to this prompt as compared to everyone else is 👩🍳💋, just a perfect encapsulation of how wary we are of these questions, how reluctant we are to give a definitive answer, how much we defer to needing data from language users, and how we accept change over time.

Evergreen reminder for linguists: don’t submit your papers to Lingua! (a web search for “zombie lingua” pulls up lots about this.) Don’t publish with Oxford UP! (see below; I declined writing an invited chapter a couple years ago for this exact reason)

Thank you for thinking of me. I am sorry to have to decline, with apologies to the author, whose work I respect very much. Unfortunately, I am unable to contribute any endorsement to Oxford University Press, which bypassed the consensus of specialist scholars of gender and sexuality to give its imprimatur to not one but two transphobic monographs. Such a cynical undertaking flies in the face of the press’s claims to value the expertise of subject specialists. I realize that my small protest is hardly likely to be noticed, and I also understand why first-time authors feel unable to interrupt their contracts. As trans people in the US and UK are prevented from accessing health care, subjected to ostracism and violence, and murdered, however, refraining from contributing to a press that is actively abetting the current fascist attack on gender and sexuality studies as a field and on LGBTQ+ people seems the very least I can do.
