I’ve actually known clients that won’t hire designers who are too into coding - they felt that there was a lack of focus on aesthetics, creativity, and design.

Should architects learn carpentry & plumbing? Should MDs learn how to do physiotherapy? Designers have an understanding of the constraints the design within - print & interaction. But coding is a specific function - some designers code, many don’t. Just as most never operated a printing press.
