The cloud of boiling soot and licking flame hit an invisible wall. The air heated like a bread oven, quavering, and the rain turned to steam. Ophelia held her hand out. Sweat dripped from her chin. Her chest rose and fell with each ragged breath as air blasted from her and met Oernaudt’s fire halfway, pushing both fire and steam away from them. Then, as Oernaudt closed his maw, deeming his job done, Ophelia dropped her arms limply and fell to one knee. Her head lolled on her neck. Briggs limped to her side. She swatted his careful fingers away with much less vigour than usual.

“I bind you, oh fickle draught. With seven knots, I count to naíd! Seven, six…” Ophelia dashed from her hiding place. Her foot slipped briefly and she chafed her shin, ruining her socks, but she didn’t halt. The wind blew her hair from her face in erratic, brackish coughs. She leapt from the rocks. In one—two—three long strides she’d reached her opponent. “Three…” he said as she slapped his shoulder hard. Oh no, only three more counts to hide! Her shiny black shoes dug into the sand as she turned. With all her might she threw herself to the shelter of the cliffs, dreaming of victory. As she leapt sky-high, the waves struck the rock and they, too, reached for the heavens. Time stood still as the cresting flood roared over her, all churning foam teeth and cavernous maw, while she was a bird caught in empty air. “Náid.” She gasped once, and was swept away. “Great, you brought him toothpicks,” she flitted her eyes to him, dripping in sarcasm. “You can’t fight him. He is death.” They’d come to a standstill. With one hand, the man pulled on the golden-green strings of light originating from the two large emeralds in his bracers. They were the only light between them. He’d put his hood back up and half his face was in shadow. Still, she could see a flicker of teeth and the sheen of his eyes, towering over her, unpredictable and powerful. Roan nodded. “It is…” he tried to think of the right words to explain being one with the water. But how does one explain being a changeling to a human, whose only reference is the harsh air and hard earth? “It is like the beginning of life. Before judgment. Before fear. Just wonder.” Felix’s lips parted in surprise. Then, his fingers made a gentle, caressing movement on Roan’s back that wasn’t practical or captain-like or sensical and a shudder crawled over Roan’s spine. “You’re not cold, are you?” Felix asked in response. He pulled his hand away and clasped it behind his back. “No!” Roan laughed nervously. “Eh, a little discomforted.” He looked at the newly appeared bushel of greyed green. The greenery collapsed in several places, giving the isle the look of the top part of a human skull. “This place unsettles me.” A frantic squeal cut through the silence and Felix buzzed alive, reaching for his gun. “It’s perfect!” Miss Ophelia appeared by the railing, her eyes glittering with a pep Roan had thought impossible for her character. She wore trousers and a blouse and had taken to wearing a long length of rope around her waist and chest at all times, in simile of Cieli. “What a marvellous place!” She said with such excitement her voice vibrated. Briggs walked up behind her with a self-aware grimace.

“Do you know why I’m hard on you?” He asked gently, and Briggs shrugged. Felix sat down on the side of his desk. “You are stubborn and humourless. You act smarter and more important than you are. You treat those you love like you own them. You do everything you can to be their lighthouse in the storm. Then you guard yourself, afraid of what will happen if you shine that light inward instead of out. Because underneath your arrogance, you’re so afraid that you’re not good enough and never will be.” Felix raised one eyebrow to his cracked reflection in the broken glass of his cabinet, reflecting half of his face and the seashells behind in a shattered blur. “It’s like looking in a mirror.” Sullen, Felix chucked Briggs’s pistol at him. Briggs caught it with his bad arm and winced. He looked utterly confused and said: “Does that mean you like me?” “If anything, it means I hate myself,” Felix conceded as he folded his arms in front of his chest. Then he felt a surge of power, like Lex’s blade, or like a vessel’s engine starting. The wood beneath her splintered and she shot upwards. She connected the carabiner to the cable. Then careened across the valley at top speed. Her curls twirled wildly across her face. After a few ticks, all he saw was a small dot disappearing over Broken Land. “You’ll be the death of me,” Faolin groaned.
