I understand where they're coming from-- it's hard to consider compromise when the opposition is attacking your career. AI generators should be always be marked and credited to source material used. But I'm proposing using it purely as a resource to benefit, not replace, human art growth.

AI will never kill human art because it needs us to survive. We've seen what AI "art" inbreeding does. Instead of being purely hateful of AI I believe we should be advocating responsible use. By being spiteful we risk stunting the growth of the very human artists we claim to support.

Again, AI is just one tool that should only be used in conjunction with other tools. I would not recommend someone only study real life refs, or only study stylized cartoons. AI is the wrench not the motor.

Every breath we take alive fucks the Earth up too. I bet we both have lithium smartphones. The formal educational institution is corrupt too! But if we can take from it and turn it into growth, real human art, and knowledge, that's a win in my eyes. Using AI is no worse than our lithium in my eyes.

*edited to rewrite "critical thinking" to "artistic judgement" so you can find the exact wording I used up there in the comment you replied to!

"when it's one of many different study sources" is right above you calling my art garbage. Further up if you had slowed down to read what you were replying to, I specify all references should be used with artistic judgement. We do study bad drivers to learn what parts they're doing wrong and right.

I'm not saying AI=GOOD, I'm saying there's nuance and context matters. Pull yourselves together, jesus. Some of you don't seem to understand why AI is unhealthy, you've just been told it is and therefore ALL USE IS SIN. Please give it a good critical think before you click enter on the internet.

I don't think AI should be the first answer to everything either. Anything in excess is a crutch. I do use pose references and real art studies first and foremost. During that painting I had a bunch of real photos of Kingfishers, bridges, and lakes. AI was only used to conceptualize atmosphere.

In that case, I am deeply sorry for the hurt others enacted upon you to make you want to hurt the feelings of others. I assume it's a hurt in, hurt out thing going on here.

Yes, and?
March 29, 2025 at 10:28 PM
For you to tell someone they'll never get good at art for trying a learning method when it's just one out of many different study sources is so mean spirited and unproductive. I'm fairly confident in my digital works so that doesn't hurt me, but I think you should consider that!
March 29, 2025 at 10:26 PM
People said the same about tracing for practice back when I was learning art. Public opinions have changed since then. I didn't use it back then, and I did get to be a pretty good artist! But it's not because of that, and I will never tell a learning artist that they won't be good if they do.
March 29, 2025 at 10:24 PM
No one told you to use AI. I said I disagreed and it has the potential to be used responsibly. I don't think we should shame artists who are only using it as a learning tool. Again, I DIDN'T TELL ANYONE TO DO ANYTHING. You went out of your way to insult me. Don't dish if you can't take babe :)

I also use a search engine that sells our private info, and people use it to look up snuff porn. Actually you do too, it's called Google. Your granny's probably using Facebook where people can steal her photos to make deepfake pornos and catfish. Shall we go over the lithium in your phone too?
March 29, 2025 at 10:09 PM
Stopping yourself from using any sort of aid to quicken a learning journey out of "legitimacy" is how pride stunts growth. It's the same way I encourage new artists to trace or copy by eye to grow and learn why certain things work and why others don't. You're not fake for using tools to learn.

I'm far from the best painter, but below I did use AI to help quickly visualize how different scenes and poses evoked different feelings. I used all three as "references" but obviously did not include the wobbly rods or backwards feet. It's okay to use AI the same way we use Blender for pose assist.
March 29, 2025 at 8:43 PM
I agree with AI skepticism but disagree with the statement itself. When using ANYTHING as reference, we should still exercise artistic judgement. AI can be a good tool to quickly visualize concepts to build off and inspire. We just need to remember AI is the tool, not the answer.
