the "genre" if we can call it that, or loose sub-cultural undertones came from somewhere. it didn't sprout at the dawn of the new millennium. all those ideas were executed in stuff before just less potently and imo it's really fun to see those prototypical ideas take form

Multimedia, intersectional types of art always feel so telepathically direct because they combine different storytelling formats that engage more parts of the brain-- even more so when the media format itself requires some kind of participation to function, whether that's clicks or page turns.

On one hand it might be elevator pitches given to strategically chosen acquaintances, but on the other I think one must somehow tap into like, the appeal of the Homestuck trolls: "There are silly alien blorbos awaiting you if you persist through this media format you aren't used to."

You're telling us they animated this in Photoshop..... without ending up with 12,000-layer PSDs? Their layer-wielding skills, confidence, and self control must be godly.

The Last Jedi felt like it actually progressed the spirit of that fictional world and its stakes further, and expanded the scope of what the universe could engage with, while still having a sense of identity that draws meaningfully from what came before.
