I think software people strongly dislike the messiness of the real world and users remind them that their product does not exist in a vacuum.

It’s why I think so many were drawn to crypto: it’s the “imagine a spherical cow” of software where you can pretend the real world does not exist.

my grandfather was an LA city planner in the 50s and 60s. he said they once took a field trip to houston (where there's no zoning) and realized that despite all their process, all their rules, they'd wound up with the exact same thing

(he also told them rancho palos verdes would slide into the sea)
