Spent several hours yesterday starting a brand new iPad app! I should probably be spending my time doing other things, but the more I work on this, the more energized and excited about it I become.

This hasn't happened to me in a while! Usually, I've just been maintaining my older software […]

It’s here, and I love it even more than I thought I would.

For the second time in my flying career, today I started up the engine with the chocks still in place.

"That's weird, why aren't I moving? ...oh. Dammit."

Turned the engine off, removed and stowed the chocks, then got back in. Thankfully, this was a hot start so the engine immediately started […]

Like most GA aircraft, my plane has a very loud interior. Whenever I fly, my watch fairly constantly warns me about excessive noise levels. Usually 95 db, occasionally I see 100 db. Noise cancelling headsets are basically required to be in the aircraft while the engine's running. But even then […]

My friend @cyanoacry (much more active on bluesky, @cyanoacry.bluesky.social) has a blog about the kinds of thing he gets up to with his Rutan Defiant. Yesterday, he posted a highlights of 2025, which included 2 live streams while flying! Plenty of people record and publish their flights after […]

I’m thinking of writing a little status board panel (iOS widget?) that pulls the MOS for my local airport, and highlights upcoming days that should have good flying weather.

Like “Wednesday should be good for pattern work!” Or “Friday should be clear skies all day, go do whatever!” Or “good […]

Woke up with what I’m pretty certain was food poisoning of some kind.

What a sick end to 2025.

(More seriously: I’ll be fine. I’m doing MUCH better than I was this morning. ❤️ @nicaless for taking care of me during this).

Short final, runway 17, touch and go.

From a flight at the beginning of the month. 360 cameras are fun.

You’ll note that my nose wheel does not touch the ground during this. The nosegear variants of the Vans RVs are known to be rather weak and prone to […]

Me this morning:

Me: "Oh, a creator I like put out a new video! I'll watch it!

First frame of video: An amazon logo.
Voiceover: "This video has been sponsored by amazon."

Me: "Oh fuck that. No. I'll even go click the 'not interested' thing on the video so it doesn't get recommended to me […]

Lately, I've been returning to an astrophotography app I had been near launch on a few years ago - https://astrograph.app - the idea was that you could use the PTP (Photo Transfer Protocol) to control a connected camera (i.e. a dslr, mirrorless, etc.) from an iPad (and a Mac, using catalyst).

I […]

Oh. Great. My phone auto-downloaded 26.1. Turned off auto-update, but we'll see if this gets applied anyway despite my wishes.

Wish I had thought to do that earlier.

I finished and released a new video on the state of electric aviation! It’s been a labor of love for the past 4 months, and I hope you all enjoy it!

If you’d like read this rather than watch a 24 minute video, I have the transcript up at […]

@younata 360 video is a pretty good use case for 8K.

Just a tip for anyone with 6K cameras: Don’t upload it (as a 360 video) as a 6K video to YouTube. You need to rescale it (e.g. with Handbrake) to 8K so that YouTube can see the detail. By default, YouTube will just convert it to 4K and then […]

I did the thing all the aviation youtubers are doing, and I bought a 360 camera + a pole mount for my airplane.

It's pretty cool to have this kind of third-person view of the airplane.

The workflow for importing this is... not great, but fine. You need to […]

My return flight is delayed. And it got delayed after I arrived at SFO.

Which I’m fine with, because I got a really nice view down 28L/R, an ok view of 01 L/R, and liveatc in my ears.

0/0 conditions. Yeah, I’ll very happily leave this to the professionals. They have much better equipment and far more training than I do.

Doing a short weekend trip. I was hoping to fly myself, but despite being forecast to have clear skies nearly all day, we […]
